Edwards Removed From UFC Welterweight Rankings
Leon Edwards confirmed on Thursday that the UFC has removed him from the Welterweight rankings. Leon was ranked #3 in the division, but there has been no official statement from the organization as to why he was removed from the rankings.
Leon Calls Out Khamzat, But Is It Too Late?
Shortly after being released from the UFC rankings, Edwards took to Twitter to call out UFC newcomer Khamzat Chimaev. Edwards always claimed that he’s still in the Welterweight rankings.
Calling fighters out and being relevant should’ve been something Edwards did MONTHS ago. It’s too little too late. Leon hasn’t fought since JULY 2019. When you’re active people talk about you, and when you’re not you’re easily forgotten. You can’t pick and choose who you want to fight when you’re in the UFC unless you’re McGregor, and even he has to fight for what he wants. Leon needs to stay active, take risky fights, and stop trying to keep your 8 fight win streak and make some moves to keep people talking about you.
Edwards vs Chimaev would be an interesting fight, but it would do more for Chimaev than it would for Leon. Chimaev is on a three fight KO streak with all of his fights ending in the first round. If Chimaev ends Edwards win streak it will skyrocket Chimaev to a new level. It would do nothing for Edwards other than stop a hype train. That’s it. Should Leon still take the fight? ABSOLUTELY.
Honestly at this point what does Edwards have to lose? He’s been inactive for so long that it’s time for Edwards to piss or get off the pot before the UFC cuts him. They’ve cut fighters for less, so Leon needs to make a move ASAP and not wait for the perfect fight. If Leon and Chimaev don’t end up fighting then set up the grudge match with Masvidal that should’ve happened last year.
