DL John Cominsky has surgery on wrist

John Cominsky is the latest Detroit Lions player to suffer from injury.

Defensive lineman John Cominsky reportedly injured his wrist in Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders. He was visibly in pain after the game, moving gingerly in the locker room.

Defensive Lineman coach Todd Wash said Wednesday that he hurt it during a goal-line play. He played the whole game on Sunday, even recording a sack at the very end of the game.

On Monday, he went to get his right hand re-examined and on Tuesday, he had surgery. Cominsky posted a photo on his Instagram story with his daughter, showing his hand was all wrapped up. Coach Campbell spoke on the timeline for him to return.

“Yeah, so he’s going to be down for a little bit. So, he had surgery yesterday and he’ll be down for a little while.”

Campbell also said they don’t plan on putting him on IR.

HOW THIS HURTS THE LIONS

Cominsky is the current leader on defense for quarterback pressures, tallying 10 so far this season. Seven of those were recorded in Sunday’s game against Washington. Not only did he record a sack himself in this game, he also perfectly set up Aidan Hutchinson to record his second sack of the game. Coach Campbell spoke Wednesday on the hole this leaves for the defensive line.

“…somebody’s got to pick up the slack of his production because he’s got a ton of silent production like you say or stuff that you don’t always see on the stat sheets. But he’s been a force and he’s one of the reasons why we got some of the sacks we got the other day.”

Aaron Glenn added to this Thursday.

“Anytime we lose a guy on our defense, man, is a huge loss because I count on those guys each week because there’s a specific plan for every guy that we have,” said Glenn. “But I’ll tell you what that gives an opportunity for somebody else on our defense to go out there and play.”

POTENTIAL REPLACEMENTS

Coach Campbell mentioned Austin Bryant and Demetrius Taylor as possible options for replacing Cominsky.
