Detroit Pistons Extend GM Troy Weaver

82

The Detroit Pistons have signed general manager Troy Weaver to a contract extension. This was first reported by Shams Charania of the Athletic. It was later confirmed by Mike Curtis of the Detroit News the deal was completed months ago.

This news should surprise no one. Troy Weaver has quickly amassed young talent, cap space, draft and trade capital without sacrificing the ‘restoration’ window. The Pistons have referred to their rebuild as more a restoration.

Based on the way they are restoring, it is more similar to the Bad Boys, than Going to Work Pistons. The Going to Work team was put together largely through strategic trades. Like the ones that brought the team Ben Wallace, Richard Hamilton and Rasheed Wallace. The Bad Boys? Through the draft selecting players like Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars and Dennis Rodman, just to name a few.

Troy Weaver has made it clear his philosophy is to build through the draft and refers to those players as the “core” of the team.

He’s drafted 6 first round picks in the last three years, how would you grade his selections?:

  1. Killian Hayes
  2. Isaiah Stewart
  3. Saddiq Bey
  4. Cade Cunningham
  5. Jaden Ivey
  6. Jalen Duren
  7. Honorable Mention: Isaiah Livers

Not too shabby for the new guy on the block.

What’s Next

This coming free agency is the most important one in decades for the Pistons. But Troy Weaver has the ship rightly sailed and the outlook is a beautiful one.

They have a relatively clean cap sheet in reference to dead money on the books, over $50 million in cap space, with valuable trade assets.

The most important objective on Weaver’s plate the rest of this season is player evaluation. It’s important for him to know exactly what he has, so he can make better educated decisions come the off-season.

If Troy Weaver plays his cards right the rest of this year and free agency, the Piston restoration could become reality in just a few short years.

What are some moves you hope Troy Weaver makes to keep the ‘restoration’ headed in the right direction?
