Dwane Casey announced today that he is stepping down as head coach of the Detroit Pistons and accepting a position in the front office.

News broke shortly after the Pistons dropped the season finale to the Chicago Bulls. This was a move hinted at after the Pistons won the final home game against the Brooklyn Nets. Rumors have swirled all season around Casey as head coach with many in the know believing front office was in his future.

Casey joined the Pistons as head coach in 2018 with the mandate to win now, which the team did. They reached the playoffs but had nothing to show for the future prompting the Pistons to bring in general manager Troy Weaver.

The goal quickly switched to player development in Casey’s second season as Weaver set a new mandate: “Restore”. This is the teams way of saying rebuild, while taking into account the legacy of past Pistons champions.

Now they turn their sights toward bolstering the future via the Draft, free agency and a coaching search.

Potential Replacements

The Pistons will start a coaching search that will include Milwaukee Bucks assistant Charles Lee and former Celtics coach Ime Udoka according to Shams Charania of the Athletic.

The most popular names among fans has been Vanderbilt University head coach Jerry Stackhouse and Portland Trailblazers Chauncey Billups. The two former Pistons have climbed coaching ranks and proven to be some of the better new coaches.

This will be Troy Weavers first coaching hire as Pistons general manager as Casey moves into more of a support role for his vision.

What coach do you hope Troy Weaver has on his radar?
